Players join from any device by entering a PIN and a nickname.

Built for classrooms, trainings, and audience engagement

Teachers running classroom warm-ups or end-of-unit reviews. Trainers running team-building sessions. Course creators making lessons interactive. Membership site owners driving engagement. Trivia night hosts at bars and community centers. Event organizers wanting an audience-engagement moment. Anyone who wants a real-time shared-screen game that runs in a browser, on the site they already own.

Let multiple people run their own quizzes

Running a site where more than one person makes quizzes — a few teachers sharing a school site, or several colleagues each hosting their own sessions? Assign the Quizpio Quiz Author role and each author can create, edit, and host their own quizzes from the dashboard. Authors see only their own sessions, results, and CSV exports, and can delete the sessions they ran; administrators see everything across the site. Assigning the role is all it takes, unless another plugin restricts dashboard access (see the FAQ).

Build quizzes and polls with Gutenberg blocks

Each quiz is its own custom post type with its own URL, so you manage quizzes like Posts or Pages. Inside, you compose questions using the standard Gutenberg editor — multiple-choice (4 options) or true/false. Every question has its own time limit and point value, and any question can be switched to a poll — no points, no correct answer — for opinion checks and icebreakers mixed right into the game. As you build, the editor checks each question — prompting you for the question text, a second option, unique options, and a marked correct answer (polls skip that last one) — so every published quiz is ready to play. Every quiz has a settings panel where you choose:

Scoring style — Speed bonus (faster correct answers earn more, scaling from 50% to 100% of max) or Flat (every correct answer earns the full value, the right choice for assessments where speed shouldn't matter).

Reveal answers between questions — show or skip the reveal screen that displays the correct answer and live vote distribution.

Show full standings to players — let players see the complete leaderboard on Final Results, or just the top 10 plus their own rank.

Require host to click Next between questions — switch from auto-advance to manual pacing for classroom discussion or debrief moments.

Want the quiz inside an existing post or page instead of at its own URL? Drop in a Quizpio Quiz Embed block, pick a quiz from the dropdown, publish. Same quiz, played at that location. Sessions still belong to the quiz itself, so results from embedded plays roll up to one quiz history.

The live host and player experience

For the host: Open the quiz at its own URL (or the post where you embedded it). Hit Launch Session. Share the PIN. Watch the player list fill up, then hit Start Quiz. A brief "Get ready!" countdown brings everyone to the first question at the same moment. Each question then shows for a few seconds before answering opens, so every screen has it — even on a slow connection — before anyone's clock starts. Run the quiz with live controls — start, skip, pause, resume, end — and a sidebar leaderboard that updates in real time. Wide screens get the leaderboard next to the question; phones stack it below. Each reveal screen shows the correct answer, how many players picked each option, and the standings going into the next question. On a poll question there is no correct answer to reveal — the screen shows how the room voted, and the summary reports a response rate rather than an accuracy figure.

For the player: Visit the quiz page on any device — phone, tablet, or laptop. Enter the PIN, pick a nickname (or have it prefilled from your WordPress profile if you're logged in), and you're in. You get a color avatar generated deterministically from your nickname, so you have a visual identity that recurs across sessions. Read each question as it appears, and tap your answer when answering opens a few seconds later. Watch your score climb. Poll questions are tagged as polls on your own screen, so you always know when an answer isn't being scored. The leaderboard always shows your own row — even when you're outside the top — with a YOU badge so you always know where you stand. Need to step away? Tap Leave; you exit cleanly without breaking the session for everyone else.

At the end: A Final Results screen with a top-3 medal-card podium, summary stats, the full standings (if enabled), a per-question accuracy recap, and a "Held on" byline showing the date, time, and duration — for example, "May 17, 2026 · 2:30 PM – 2:42 PM EDT · 12 min" — rendered in each viewer's local timezone via the browser's Intl API. Top-3 finishers get a confetti burst on their own screen, and the host's results screen celebrates too — all respecting
prefers-reduced-motion
. If every question in the quiz was a poll, the finish is survey-style instead: response rates and vote distributions, with no scores and no podium.

Guests vs. logged-in players: Guest play with just a nickname works by default — no account creation, no friction. Logged-in WordPress users get a richer experience: their nickname prefills from their profile, a "My past plays" button on the join and Final Results screens opens a personal history of every session they've played on this site, and they appear on the Players screen in the WordPress admin, where site owners can see who's been playing across sessions. Both tiers play the same quiz; you choose whether to require accounts via a single setting.

On refreshes and reconnects: Players who refresh, lose connection, or close the tab can rejoin and land back in the live session as it currently stands — same identity and score, and if they'd already answered the question on screen, their answer is still locked in with its result shown. Identity persists in the browser's local storage for up to 6 hours or until that session ends. The host's view survives refresh too.

Accessible and theme-independent

Quizpio is keyboard-navigable throughout, with ARIA roles and live regions so screen readers announce each phase change. The quiz interface carries its own styling and behavior rather than inheriting from the active theme, so it never picks up a theme's fonts or layout quirks and works the same on every site. It renders in your device's native system font, so type looks at home on Mac, Windows, or Android. All motion effects, the confetti included, respect the visitor's reduced-motion preference.

Admin tools, when you want them

A dashboard with stats and an active-session callout with a one-click "Open host view." A Sessions screen with filtering by quiz, pagination, and per-session detail showing the leaderboard plus a per-question breakdown with answer distribution, and an administrator can force-end an abandoned session from that detail page. A CSV export with Nickname, Rank, Score, Question #, Question text, Selected Option, Correct Answer, Correct?, Points, and response-time-in-milliseconds per row — filename carries the quiz slug plus the session's launch date, time and number, so downloads stay sortable and never collide in a teacher's Downloads folder. For sites with returning players, the Players screen lists registered users with sessions-played, best score, last played, and click-through to a per-user history. Site-wide Settings cover polling interval (responsiveness vs. server load tradeoff), reveal pause duration, and a guest-allow toggle, plus manual data cleanup — delete sessions by date range, or wipe all session data. Quizpio never deletes anything on its own.

Free to use, with an optional Pro add-on

GPL v2, open source, and complete on its own. No feature of the free plugin is held back for the paid add-on, now or later — no feature locks, and nothing that interrupts you: no dashboard banners, no upgrade nags, nothing pushed at you that you did not ask for. There is one page under the Quizpio menu describing Quizpio Pro, and it disappears once Pro is active. Runs on any standard WordPress host — no Node.js, no WebSocket server, no third-party service required. Translation-ready with a bundled .pot file. Deleting Quizpio removes all of its data — tables, options, quizzes, and session results — for a clean uninstall, with a setting to keep everything instead — quizzes, results, and settings — if you plan to reinstall later.

What Quizpio Pro adds

Quizpio Pro is a separate paid add-on, sold as a yearly license on the quizpio.com website. The free plugin contains no feature locks and nothing that interrupts you; one page under the Quizpio menu describes what Pro adds, and it disappears once Pro is active.

Do players need an account?

No — guest play with just a nickname works by default. Logged-in WordPress users get extras: their nickname prefills from their profile, and a "My past plays" button gives them a personal history of their results across sessions. If you want to require accounts, flip the "Allow guest players" setting off.

How many players can join a single quiz?

There's no fixed cap — it scales with your host. On entry-level shared hosting, Quizpio comfortably runs classroom-sized rooms of 50–100 players; a stronger host handles more. Since the plugin works by having each player's browser poll the server, the real ceiling is how many of those requests your host can serve, not a number baked into Quizpio.

Can I configure how quizzes behave?

Yes. Each quiz has its own settings in the Gutenberg editor sidebar: scoring style (speed bonus or flat), whether to show reveal screens between questions, whether players see the full leaderboard at the end, and whether the host must click Next between questions (manual mode for classroom discussion). Site-wide, you can adjust how often players' browsers poll the server and how long reveal screens last.

Can I export quiz results?

Yes. Quizpio → Sessions → click any session → Export CSV — or click Download CSV right on the final-results screen after hosting a game. The two True/False labels are ordinary answer options, so you can rename them — useful when your quiz is written in a language other than your site's. Either type can become a poll with the Poll — no points toggle.

How is scoring calculated?

Each quiz has a Scoring style setting. Speed bonus (default) gives faster correct answers more points — between 50% and 100% of the question's max. Flat gives every correct answer the full point value regardless of speed, which is the better fit for assessments.

What happens if a player refreshes their browser?

They stay in the quiz. If a second one is added by mistake, it is disabled automatically and shows a short notice in its place, so the first quiz keeps working. (You can run different quizzes on different posts, of course.)

Can players leave a quiz once it has started?

Yes. A Leave link appears on every question and reveal screen. After a confirmation prompt, the player exits the quiz cleanly. (Players still in the lobby leave fully — their entry is removed.)

Will I see my rank if I'm not in the top players?

Yes. The leaderboard shows the top 5 on the reveal after each scored question and the top 10 on the final results screen. If you finish outside those cuts, your row appears below the list (after a "…" separator) with a YOU badge, so you always know where you stand.

How do I run a poll or opinion question?

Switch on Poll — no points in the question's block settings. Poll questions have no correct answer and award no points; the reveal shows how the group voted, with no leaderboard, since a poll changes nobody's score (with the quiz's reveal setting on, everyone sees the vote split after each poll; with it off, nobody sees it during the game; your final results screen shows each poll's top pick, and Quizpio → Sessions shows every vote). If every question in a quiz is a poll, players get a survey-style finish with no scores or podium, and the quiz's scoring settings hide in the editor. The old workaround — setting Max points to 0 — no longer works: those questions now score normally, so switch them to polls.

How do I translate Quizpio?

The plugin ships with a
quizpio.pot
file in the
languages/
folder. Each question now shows for a few seconds before answering opens — the timer counts down "Answers open in…" — so every screen has it in time and starts with the full time.

Fixed: Speed points no longer include the time your site takes to respond. Answers are timed from when they reach the server.

Fixed: An answer tapped in the last second could be refused with "No active question." and no feedback afterwards. Answers already on their way now get 3 extra seconds to arrive, and one that is still too late is told so on the reveal.

Fixed: Edits you save while a quiz's lobby is open now reach that session when you press Start Quiz. Before, the session kept the copy taken at Launch Session, so a corrected answer could still mark right answers wrong.

Fixed: Add New Quiz and editing a quiz always open the block editor, even with the Classic Editor or Disable Gutenberg plugin active, so the quiz builder is always there. Posts and pages keep the editor you choose — Quizpio doesn't change that.

Fixed: If the host paused just as a player tapped an answer, that player could not answer the question after the quiz resumed. Now they see a note to tap again, and the new answer counts.

Fixed: When a connection or server problem stopped a player's answer from reaching the quiz, their device showed "Incorrect" and locked the answers, even for a correct answer. Now the device resends the answer automatically, and if it still can't get through, asks the player to tap again.

Fixed: A firewall or CDN error page, such as a rate-limit check, could sign a player out of a running quiz with no way back in. Players now stay in, and their device keeps reconnecting.

Improved: The Background Refresh Interval setting now explains how it sets the length of each question's lead-in.

1.3.2

Fixed: Every player's final screen now shows their true place in the room, e.g. "You finished #12 of 28".

Improved: CSV exports now include the session's date, time and number in the filename, so same-day sessions never share a name.

Improved: Clearer first-run steps on the Quizpio dashboard and Welcome screen, and more accurate examples in the plugin description.

1.3.1

Fixed: On sites running WooCommerce, users with the Quizpio Quiz Author role were sent to the My Account page instead of the dashboard and lost the toolbar on the front end, so they couldn't create or manage their quizzes. They now reach Quizpio's screens and keep the toolbar as intended.

1.3.0

Fixed: After a poll question, the reveal could still show a leaderboard — on players' screens in a mixed quiz, and on the host's screen with the side panel hidden. A poll question changes nobody's score, so its reveal now shows only the votes, everywhere. Scored questions keep their leaderboard.

Improved: In an all-poll quiz, the host's side-panel button now reads "Hide Players" / "Show Players" — that panel lists players, not a leaderboard.

Improved: In an all-poll quiz, the editor's Quiz Settings panel hides Scoring style and Show full standings, which don't apply to polls. Nothing is lost — switch any question back to scored and both return exactly as you left them.

Added: Each button in the host's action bar now carries a stable name (
data-qp-action
), so add-ons can place their own buttons reliably. Nothing changes for hosts.

1.2.1

Fixed: Joining could rarely appear to succeed without adding the player — they'd land in the quiz unable to answer. It now fails clearly and can be retried.

Fixed: Two players claiming the same nickname at the same instant could both join, leaving two identical names on the leaderboard.

Improved: Dropped a redundant index on the answers table — one less write per answer.

Note: Updates Quizpio's database tables, automatically, on upgrade.

1.2.0

Fixed: The live quiz now uses WordPress's current rendering method, so it keeps working on future WordPress releases. Nothing about how you build or host a quiz changes.

Fixed: Counts and their labels now agree — a finish screen with one question reads "1 Question", not "1 Questions". Each language uses its own plural rules.

Fixed: The Settings page now confirms when your settings have been saved. They always were; there was simply no message saying so.

Added: A Quizpio Pro page under the Quizpio menu, describing the optional paid add-on. It is one page you can ignore — nothing else in the plugin mentions it, and it disappears entirely once Quizpio Pro is active.

1.1.0

New

Poll questions — switch any question to Poll — no points. An all-poll quiz gets a survey-style finish instead of a podium.

Quiz Author role — give teachers or colleagues their own access to create and host quizzes. Each author sees only their own sessions and results; administrators still see everything.

Editable True/False labels — rename them to run True/False questions in any language.

Pre-start countdown — a short "Get ready!" on the host and player screens, so everyone starts together.

Editor completion checks — an incomplete question is flagged before you publish (no prompt, fewer than two options, duplicate options, no correct answer marked), with the missing pieces listed inline. Drafts always save; only publishing is blocked.

Admin force-end — administrators can end any running session to clear an abandoned lobby or game.

Delete sessions by date range, not just before a single date.

Choose what happens on uninstall — remove everything (the default), or keep everything — quizzes, results, and settings — for a future reinstall.

Improved

Session privacy — rosters, final standings, and question recaps are no longer readable by outsiders who guess a session address, and players now authenticate their live updates with their session token.
